This weekend the USAT Collegiate National Championships were held in Lubbock, Texas. In 2008, the UCSD Tri Team unexpetedly took the women’s title with AVIA sponsored Amanda Felder & women’s race winner leading the way. In 2009, UCSD was again in unchartered water – they had a reputation to uphold. With the success in 2008, the team tripled in size, increasing the group workouts, bringing on a new coach and inner-team competition to make the travelling team. It paid off.
The UCSD women’s team extended their national winning streak for the second year in a row. The women were lead by Darlene Hunt who placed 4th overall with an amazing race. She was followed by Lauren Chiodini, who after having a less than perfect swim, dominated on the bike putting up the women’s fastest bike split. The women scored a total of 41 points, 2nd place Boulder scored 69.
The UCSD men’s team stepped up their game from last year, moving from 11th into 7th place. The men were lead by Tim Ray who finished 3rd for the graduate males.
The UCSD Team placed 5th overall to claim a spot on the podium. GO TRITONS! Look for UCSD to put up some great performances at the Wildflower Triathlons.
