Congrats to Lucie Zelenkova and Keegan Williams! This past weekend was the first racing-packed weekend of the year and teamTBB came out to show their colors brilliantly.
IM 70.3 South Africa
With a beautiful day ahead, light wind and nice temperature some 1,500 race participants started in 4 waves at 7:00am on the beach in East London, South Africa. On the start list were 3 athletes representing teamTBB; being Caroline Koll, Lucie Zelenkova and James Cunnama. These 3 athletes recently joined the teamTBB squad, so this was a good opportunity to kick off the season with a half-Ironman distance in their home country. Lucie Zelenkova decided straight away at the start of the swim to test her arm, which she broke some 8 weeks ago during an accident on the bike, and with great success as she left the water in 1st position with a nearly 3 minutes gap on number 2 Sanmari Woithe. Lucie continued her lead with a strong bike leg and eventually build a lead on the run up to 10 minutes over Heleen Bij De Vaate to win her career first IM 70.3.
In the first race in teamTBB’s international season, Kiwi representative Keegan Williams, kicked the year off in sensational fashion. Armed with an improved swim, Keegan exited just behind the first pack and thus, was in play all day. Surprising himself by getting off the bike 3rd, he ran ’scared’ for the full marathon, taking second spot during the run over the last 5 km. Keegan clocked a personal best of 8h 44min at the Wanaka Challenge Queenstown, New Zealand, taking 25 minutes off his former personal best to take a gutsy 2nd and first podium win in this international event.
