Tiradentes, Brazil – The XTERRA Regional Real attracted more than 1000 athletes in Tiradentes and São João del Rei (MG), Brazil.
Altogether, more than 1000 athletes, amateur and professional, competed in the Mountain Bike Duathlon, Mountain Bike Race and Night Running Race in the two days of competition that filled the square in Tiradentes, Minas Gerais.
The day started early at 9am, with the most anticipated race being the XTERRA MTB Cup, athletes faced a journey of 52 km full mud – especially after the rain Saturday night – closed trails, steep descents and ascents and dirt roads and rocks. Before that, the bikers were exposed to the heat on a ride of 15 km to São João del Rei, where they were given the official start. At the end of the race, Rubens Donizete won the men’s race and Shonny Vanlandingham won the women’s race.
The highlight of XTERRA Regional Estrada Real was the American Shonny Vanlandingham, who fired in front of the other competitors and won two races. In the MTB Cup, the American mountain bike champion left behind Erika Gramiscelli, the champion from the previous race stop and held the top position for almost the entire circuit. Cristina de Carvalho, of Sao Paulo, made another podium in third. In the Duathlon Shonny was again the champion. She put a lead of almost 20 minutes on Cristina de Carvalho. Luzia Bello, Santos, came in third.
“The competition was good, with everything that I expected: a lot of mud and slippery slopes. The hardest parts were the climbs, very steep,” said Shonny.
