Valle de Bravo, Mexico – Shonny Vanlandingham took home the crown at the XTERRA Mexico Championship last weekend. Shonny V. who seems to get stronger each year and throughout the season, claimed her 3rd win in 4 races.
The Valle de Bravo race course is a two hour drive from Mexico City. It sits on a huge reservoir, with green hills and mountains perfect for XTERRA racing. The swim course was relocated due to the lack of rain this year. Shonny V. got caught up in a agressive, messy swim start and came out of the water 3-minutes back from Olympian Fabiola Corona.
The bike course is hilly with some great single track, a ride you can actually enjoy. Vanlandingham recovered from the swim and had her game face back on. At the end of the first lap, Rebecca Dussault had pulled ahead of Corona and Vanlandingham was coming on strong. On lap two, Shonny V. stormed by her competition in impressive style and prepared for her victory run.
The run course is breathtaking, as you emerge for the woods racers enjoy views of the valley and lake. Shonny V. negotiated the hills well, and promised to enjoy the views post-race and with a celebratory margarita. Vanlandingham held off Dussault by 30-seconds with the rest of the field trailing several minutes behind.
