Port Macquerie, New South Wales, Australia
The 2009 Ironman Australia turned out to be a rainy and relatively cool day on New South Wales’ mid-coast. To add to each athlete’s nerves was the buzz through the Ironman village about the potential need to cancel the swim. Luckily the weather cleared just enough to allow these athletes to put their skills to the test and complete 140.6
Rebekah Keat, the local favorite, always gives 110% on the race course, but when racing in OZ feels a special obligation to give her fellow countrymen a top performance. In the weeks proceeding the race, Bek knew among her competitors would be Ironman World Champions- Chrissie Wellington and Michellie Jones. She pushed herself even harder in training and knew she was ready to race with the best.
Keat hung tough with Wellington through the swim — 50:55 to Wellington’s 50:48. Wellington did some damage on the first 60km of the bike and though Keat would ride stronger as the day wore on, it wasn’t enough to reel in Wellington. Bek would finish the day with 3:12:42 marathon to secure 2nd place on the podium and her second Australian title.
Additional AVIA athletes racing from teamTBB included: Abigail Bayley (4th)
