The cross country race was a tight battle between Willow Koerber (Gary Fisher/Subaru), Catharine Pendrel, Georgia Gould, Katerina Nash, and Lea Davison (Maxxis). Catharine set the intial pace up the first climb, but was passed on the descent by Willow. After Willow flatted, Georgia and Catharine regained the lead. A lap later Willow was back in front. Catharine was in 2nd, only to suffer a flat towards the finish. Willow finished 40 seconds ahead of Georgia with Catharine in third, Lea Davison in 4th and Katerina Nash rounding out the podium in 5th.
Catharine’s third place was enough to give her the series title, with Georgia in second, Heather Irmiger in 3rd, Katerina Nash in 4th, and Pua Sawicki 5th. It was Catharine’s first series title. LUNA has won the National Series championship every year since 2005.
The short track was another tactical race between the LUNA team, Lea Davison, Heather Irmiger and Willow Koerber. After an aggressive start that saw multiple attacks and lead changes, the main group quickly wittled down to the three LUNA riders, Heather and Lea. On the last lap Katerina attacked hard up the only climb with Lea in tow and a small gap back to Georgia. Lea was able to squeak around Katerina before the final turn and held her off in the sprint for the win. Katerina’s second place was followed closely by Georgia and Catharine in 3rd and 4th.
Georgia, Catharine and Chloe will return home for some rest before the World Championships in 3 weeks in Canberra, Australia. Katerina Nash will be focusing on the January 2010 Cross World Championships, an hour from her hometown of Prachatice, Czech.
