Congrats Shonny! on your fantastic win at the XTERRA South Central Cup in the Heart of Arkansas. Shonny Vanlandingham of Durango, Colorado is the most successful mountain biker in NORBA history with 15 national race wins and three Series titles, marked her second XTERRA Championship victory and also broke McQuaid’s winning streak.
The race started on a one-lap 1500 meter swim in very warm water. As usual, Christine Jeffrey lead the women’s the pack. McQuaid caught her on the second lap of the bike and Shonny V. moved into second with Jen Smith in a close 3rd.
Melanie had a good lead at T2 but was suffering the effects of food poisoning. Shonny, a native Texan and off-season Kona resident, thrives in the hot, humid conditions. McQuaid and others began to fade as Vanlandingham gave a final push for the finish.
Shonny came home with her first win of the year. AVIA sponsored, Melanie McQuaid held on for second and Jen Smith a took third.
In the points series, Melanie is still first with 500 points, Shonny V. is in second with 430 points, Danelle Kabush is 5th. In the men’s standings, Conrad Stoltz who took this week off from racing, still holds the lead in the men’s standings.
