Eneko Llanos was never meant to be a triathlete but his brother Hektor’s water polo injury kicked off a lifelong journey in the sport or triathlon. Eneko decided to give it a try  but wasn’t convinced it was him. Well, convinced or not, Hektor new his brother would excel and the rest of the world is thrilled to have Eneko pushing Macca & Crowie to their best performances ever.

Eneko loves the lifestyle triathlon provides. He loves feeling healthy- and as a vegetarian he has purest approach to his body. If you ask about his training diet, he’ll tell you “I do not like to eat animals”. He also keeps balanced by surfing, enjoying long naps, and backpacking. If you ask about his source of motivation for top performances for over 13-years, here’s what he’ll say “I am competitive with myself. I’m inspired by the idea of bettering myself year after year. This is what has led me to reach higher places and, this year, to lead the race and come close to achieving victory. My motivation and my wish is to keep on improving”.

This year you can see the Eneko & Hektor racing at the AVIA Wildflower Triathlons, Ironman Frankfurt, XTERRA World Championships and the Ironman World Championships. With a 2nd place title under Eneko’s belt, there’s only one place to go… Dream Big!

Known as RacerGirl, 3x XTERRA World Champion, Triathlete Magazine’s XTERRA Athlete of the Year, owner of countless other titles, and just a really cool chic, has joined the AVIA family and brought her team along. Melanie will be racing in the AVI-Stoltz, co-designed with Conrad Stoltz, the King of XTERRA. These two icons of XTERRA are also partnering with AVIA to indulge in their love of the sport by giving back and fostering the next world champions. MelRad Racing is the first purely XTERRA team that will train and conquer together.

Melanie is more excited than ever to be out on the race course. You can bet she’ll be racing her old faves, adding in a few 70.3’s she’s been dying to do, and sights are set on earning a 4th XTERRA World Champion title.

  • European Ironman Championships, 3rd – 2008
  • Ironman Frankfurt, 5th – 2008 (top 10 on 3 occasions)

Hektor Llanos has long history in triathlon. Though he began in the sport of water polo, a broken wrist forced him to find other outlets including running and cycling. In time, he decided to try his hand at triathlon. Hektor began racing in 1991 as a way to stay healthy and enjoy quality of life. It was Hektor, that would encourage his brother Eneko to join the sport- and who would have guessed that two brothers would share such passion, speed, and determination for the triathlon. Since then, Hektor & Eneko have been training and racing together around the world.

Hektor is very proud of his accomplishments and has really enjoyed the entire journey but notes that one of his most memorable moments was when both brothers made the podium at Ironman Austria. In his spare time, Hektor enjoys the outdoors, reading, surfing and spending time with loved ones. As much as Hektor likes to win, he says triathlon is still about personal accomplishment; he hopes to break his Ironman PR of 8:11:39. In 2009 you can see Hektor & Eneko race at the Spanish Championships, the AVIA Wildflower Triathlons, Ironman Germany, Kona, and the XTERRA World Championships.

Joanna swam competitively through high school and college. After college she was looking for a new adventure. She was swimming on a masters team with a lot of triathletes. With their advice, Joanna borrowed a bike, a helmet and just jumped in a race. She was hooked!

As if training for the Olympics and working toward an Ironman World title, doesn’t take enough energy, these accomplishments only capture half of her talents and successes.  Joanna has a Master’s in Genetic Counseling and completed her Ph.d in Genetic Epidemiology in 2001. Joanna is truly a woman of multifaceted talents, and driven to succeed at whatever she gives her attention to. Her main goal is to stay healthy, race hard, and enjoy each day.

Joanna claims to still have enough free time to complete the New York Times puzzle page each morning, as well as putter in the kitchen and play the harp. This year you can see Joanna race at Vineman 70.3, several 70.3’s, and perhaps a repeat at the Ironman 70.3 World Champs.

Conrad Stoltz

Known as “King of XTERRA” or “Caveman”

  • XTERRA West Champion - 2008
  • 3x XTERRA World Champion – ’01, ’02, ‘07
  • 5x USA XTERRA National Champion
  • 2x Olympian (Sydney & Athens)

Conrad lives and breathes the sport of triathlon. Twenty-six of his 34 years have been spent bike racing, twenty years in the sport of triathlon, and sixteen of those years have been spent racing as a Pro. Though his talent in road bike racing and road triathlons was enough for two Olympic births, in 2000 Conrad found his true passion off-road. Home is wherever the racing is best- which is currently the US for part of the year and the rest of the year South Africa. Conrad is the most recognized name in XTERRA; look for him to repeat his performance at XTERRA World’s for a 4th title.

She credits her parents, both masters rowers, with her love of sport and understanding the discipline it takes to achieve. Pip’s natural progression in the sport, led her to triathlon, and an opportunity to test herself in new ways. In Australia, she known as a true icon of the sport and recognized by several titles, including: Australian Junior Elite Athlete of the Year, Australian U23 Athlete of the Year, and Australian Team Member & title holder.

For the last few years, Pip focused on racing the ITU circuit but ready for a new challenged she’s found that the 70.3 distance is the perfect match for her skills. She had several great races this year, including Wildflower and Longhorn 70.3. And after a swift kick during the swim portion at the Ironman 70.3 World Championships landed her in the hospital, you can bet she’ll be even more hungry for next season.

In her spare time, Pip is working on a Graduate Diploma of Sports Nutrition, She also enjoys traveling and trying foods from around the world, watching the dolphins swim, visiting local farmer’s markets and curling up with a good book. Saul Raisin Thumbnail

Saul Raisin

Saul will be racing at the AVIA Wildflower Triathlons on May 2, 2009. Stop by the AVIA booth to meet Saul and get a signed copy of his book “Tour de Life”.

A professional cyclist at age 23, Saul won the “Best Young Rider” jersey at the Tour de Georgia and turned in the strongest American performance at the 2006 World Championships before a near death crash in Italy resulted in severe brain trauma which forced him to retire from professional cycling. Now fully recovered, Saul recently authored the book “Tour de Life” and launched the Raisin Hope Foundation (www.raisinhope.org) In an effort to utilize his athletic ability to benefit fellow survivors of traumatic brain injuries.

STo kick-off his crusade, Saul ran the New York Marathon over with custom green laces in the Foundation’s signature color. Saul will also be competing at events throughout 2009 including the AVIA Wildflower Triathlon and Vineman 70.3. His ultimate goal for ’09 is to complete the Ironman Hawaii in October.

“I am proud to be part of the AVIA team which includes some of the most inspiring and determined athletes I’ve ever met,” noted Saul Raisin. “Since the accident, my mission has been to raise funding for brain injury research, increase awareness and further connect with individuals and families whose lives have been affected by a traumatic brain injury. My partnership with AVIA will better enable me to accomplish my goals while doing what I love: competing.”

  • Ironman 70.3 Lake Stevens, 4th – 2007
  • Victoria New Balance Half Iron, 1st – 2007, 2006
  • Canadian Long Course Champion – 2006

Heather, known affectionately as “mantis” for her long limbs an unconscious habit of cocking her wrists while running, broke into the sport of triathlon in 2006. She was a varsity rower for the University of British Columbia and started competing in adventure races and triathlons while completing a M.Sc. at the University of Victoria. After putting a Ph.D. in developmental genetics on hold, she won the Canadian Long Course Championships and the overall age group title at her first Ironman in Coeur d’Alene; the races just one week apart from one another! This qualified her for the Hawaii Ironman World Championships where her and her husband Trevor raced during their honeymoon.

Heather’s career as a professional triathlete started out with a bang. Her most recent success was a podium finish at the inaugural Ironman 70.3 Boise. We are looking forward to her continued success as she pursues her dream to be an Ironman World Champion.

  • Ironman 70.3 Lake Stevens, 1st Place AG Finish – 2007
  • Canadian Age Group National Champion - 2006
  • ITU Long Course World Championships, Canadian Team – 2006

Growing up as a downhill ski racer in Canada gave Trevor the opportunity to try many other sports as cross training during the summer months. During his teenage years he spent four years racing on European soil as an amateur road cyclist, two of which were full time in France and Italy. Despite many successes in Europe and National Championship wins as a cyclist, he decided to move away from sport in early 2001 and focus on going back to school. It wasn’t until 2004 that he regained the desire to compete and did so by finishing his first triathlon. He quickly signed up for an Ironman that same year, loving the challenge of the event. 2007 proved to be a breakthrough year for Trevor as an age-group athlete; he finished at the front of the pack on every occasion. After 3 years of racing and progressing as an amateur, 2008 will be his first season in the Pro/Elite ranks. A solid finish at the 2008 AVIA Wildflower Triathlon, and a 9th place showing at Ironman 70.3 Boise against strong competition has given him the drive to commit fully to the sport of long course triathlon. 2009 will mark a long awaited return to full time racing and training. Keep an eye open for some big results to come!

Victor Plata has been a part of US triathlon history for over a decade. Victor is one of the those individuals that commands success at whatever he tries his hand at, and seems to only perform better with age. In 2004, Victor was a member of the U.S. Olympic Triathlon Team. He is an 8-time member of the USA Elite National Team, and currently serves on the USA Triathlon Board of Directors.  He founded Team KINeSYS Professional Triathlon Team, which incorporated team tactics into triathlon.  The Team qualified two members for the 2003 Pan American Team, and two members for the 2004 U.S. Olympic Team.  Victor also has a commitment to giving back to his community and has done so through writing a biweekly sports column in the Santa Cruz Sentinel newspaper, motivational speaking, coaching, and instructing triathlon clinics.

Victor is a true “renaissance man” and in 2008 after graduating from the University of the Pacific, McGeorge School of Law and beginning his practice, had yet another breakthrough year. Throughout Victor’s career, he has always competed in the Tri-California series, due to his love for these courses in his backyard and the wonderful tri-cal group that hosts the races. Victor won both Pacific Grove and San Francisco Triathlons to help him capture the Tri-California Pro Series title.

Victor is currently practicing full time law  as well as preparing for his best season yet. We know he can do it – pending no attacks from any rottweilers or llamas (yes! he’s encountered both!) and that his girlfriend gets him to the startline on time (he’s never owned a car). He’s also learning Spanish as well as some ballroom dancing moves. This year you can see Victor races at the Cap Tex Tri, a couple of Pan Am & World Cup Events, Pro Nationals, and of course, the Tri-California Series, including Wildflower.

Jillian’s passion for competition and sheer determination, has made her one of the fastest newcomers on the ITU circuit. She began swimming at age 8, but she found her true talent in running. Jillian was the Missouri State High School Champion for cross country, 1600m, and 3200m. At the Golden West Invitational, her 4min 54sec 1600m, ranked her 9th in the Nation for High School. She ran on scholarships for University of Missouri, winning several more titles in cross country, 1500m, 5000m, and steeple chase. Jillian is a tried and true road runner, evidence by the tattoo on her right hip.

After graduation, Jillian’s dad encouraged her to experiment with triathlon. Her “thank you” for the bike he gave her for Christmas was winning the her first age-group title at the USAT National Championships. In 2006, she competed in the ITU World Championships in Lausanne, Switzerland. A year later she made her debut as a professional triathlete and is now part of the USAT Elite Development Program.

Jillian is the 5th ranked American on ITU World Rankings. In 2009, you’ll see her racing the Tri-California events and other ITU races around the world. Jillian has her sights set on making the 2012 Olympic Team. I just wonder what her next tattoo will be?
